Resilience in the Roots: Celebrating Women Farmers in 2026

The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, recognising women as the backbone of sustainable food systems. HEART-Agriculture is marking the year with a flagship event in Cox's Bazar, registered with the FAO.

Sunjida's story

When her husband went missing after migrating to Malaysia, Sunjida Akter (30) was left to support two children alone. She joined the HEART-Agriculture program and became a pioneer of climate-smart agriculture in her community.

Her farm shows the three pillars of climate-smart agriculture: productivity, to keep her daughter and son fed; adaptation, using local practices to cope with extreme weather; and mitigation, with techniques that cut carbon and protect the local ecosystem.

The event

The day includes a keynote on women's climate resilience, a field walk led by Sunjida, and a workshop on measuring carbon reduction. It honours Sunjida not only as a farmer but as an architect of a climate-secure future.
